fearlessfan: (it's on me)

People, I live for the times when the "post snippets from your works in progress" meme comes around, because I post approximately 1 completed story every 4.3 years. I love it when I get to cheat. I am even cheating with the meme, which says to post three lines, but the thing is, I can't pick out three lines (not because they're all so awesome, but because they all seem kind of mediocre and bland, not that that stops me from sharing). I'm going to post the opening scene/section for each instead. I AM SUCH A REBEL.

Also, you know, they're kind of rough, the second one especially.

That said! Here goes.

Rusty finally settles down and the girl takes off.

I'm sorry, the note says, in Isabel's familiar, unhurried script. I thought it would be different.

He reads the note three times and then goes to the bathroom medicine cabinet. He takes off the fake backing and pulls out a second note, which says the same thing in different words and closes with, Don’t think this means I didn't love you.

It's the last time Rusty hears from Isabel Lahiri. He sees her once more, five years later, but they're on opposite sides of the game again and the most she does to honor their relationship is look the other way. It's not nothing, and Rusty's grateful when it happens.

It takes him a while to get there.

The day Eddie moves out, Fiona throws a party. Eddie isn't invited.

He shows up anyway. Of course.

"Don't recall writing your new address on an invitation," she says when she spots him in the living room, flirting with one of her coworkers. The new girl, Lily.

"I figured I didn't need an invite."

"You figured wrong."

"Do you see how she talks to me?" Eddie leans in toward Lily and indicates Fiona with his beer.

"I do," Lily says, but follows it up with a smile aimed at Fiona to show she's in on the joke. It annoys Fiona, for some reason, and then Lily compliments Fiona's dress.

"Thank you," Fiona says, gripping her wine glass more tightly. The dress Fiona is wearing took forever to find but was worth the search; it makes Fiona feel the kind of beautiful she needs to be if she wants to be a model. Lily wants to be a model, too, but while she has height Fiona envies and features she admires, Fiona has always thought she lacked a certain spark. Tonight, however, she looks different. Something about her makeup, or her dress. Or her hair. Maybe subtle highlights or a trim.

Fiona stops considering when she realizes the conversation has gone on without her.

"And that's another thing," Eddie is saying, in that annoying New York voice Fiona's glad to say good-bye to. Fiona rolls her eyes and looks at Lily, and realizes, in a flash, why she looks so different: the brightness of her eyes, the color in her cheeks. Eddie, who drank the last of Fiona's milk before leaving this morning, is making this girl blush.

Fiona laughs at the thought, a little too loudly and at the wrong moment. Eddie stops talking and Lily looks at her, confused.

"Just remembered something funny," Fiona says, and then finishes her glass of wine in one gulp. "I'm going to get another drink."

Ooooh, I really like that Ocean's 11 bit. Very tantalizing.

Oh FIONA. Seriously, you write her so very well. I can see Sienna Miller's overly bright, half-critical, half-annoyed look at Lily when she realizes Lily is blushing.

[swoons happily] Yearning!

Yes, yearning! I am all about the yearning as well! Even though I love the energy between Eddie and Pippin, I also really like the Eddie/Fiona vibe as well. One of my favorite scenes of the whole series is between them (the end of the episode about the toaster, when she cries and he comforts her - I think I've babbled to you about this before). Basically, I just heart Eddie in all possible permutations.

Anyway, the important thing is: Thanks for the comment! Especially for the comment about the line you liked in particular - that really cheered me up when I got the comment this afternoon at work, when I was in the middle of a really annoying project and wanted to throw the stapler through my computer monitor. You saved office equipment!

Seriously, thank you.

Ms. E! I'm totally cracking up at the "WAITING!!!!" in the middle of your comment. I truly believe that what Rusty and Linus need is a fic about them written by you, and really, I should know what they need, considering the fact that Matt Damon is my secret boyfriend.

Thank you for this comment, buddy! Also, am going to e-mail you in a little bit, but! OMG PRISON BREAK MONDAY!!!! ;ALDJF;ALKJG
