yuletide debatery

It's Yuletide time again! I've been debating internally over whether to do the challenge again this year (last year was my first time), and as a result had the following conversation:

Self: Well, I was thinking, I really enjoyed the Yuletide challenge last year, so -

Friend: Wait, what?

Self: I was just saying that I enjoyed doing the Yuletide challenge last year.

Friend: No, you didn't!

Self: I didn't?

Friend: No! You were totally stressed out! You spent most of our conversations last fall complaining about having signed up in the first place!

Self: I did?

(Cue wavy-lined flashback featuring me sitting amidst piles of Diet Pepsi cans, staring bleakly at the computer screen, until finally I open a compose mail window instead of MS Word and write an endless e-mail along the lines of of,

Friend,

How am I supposed to write about Lassiter when CLEARLY Shawn and Gus are the funniest things on the show? DAMN YOU, Self of six weeks ago, for clicking "Any Character" on the Psych pull-down menu when signing up for the challenge! DAMN YOU!

Self: Yeah. Yeah, I do.

And yet. AND YET. I find myself still tempted to take part! I think most of this is because I'm still dying to read a story about Cowboy Lowell and Sun Fu from Broken Trail, whose relationship high point is featured about halfway through this trailer (said high point is, rather pathetically, her reaching up to touch his cheek). Okay, there may have been two other moments as or more exciting, but nothing fully satisfying! And I still so long for their story!

You're probably right! I'm going to think about it over the weekend, but I'll probably cave and sign up.

I've come to like Lassiter more and more with the episodes they've shown in the more recent episodes of Psych, but last year I did struggle a bit!

You should do it! I think I might know this friend, and okay, maybe you were the *tiniest* bit stressed about writing the story, but look at what you wrote! It was AMAZING!! So you should do it.

If I sign up for Yuletide, you have to do that thing I've been begging you to do! Because if I sign up, it means I will write a story, so my part of the deal is (almost kinda sorta) done!

The angst is all part of the fun. No, really. That's why you remember it as fun: because somehow, weeks of OMG I'm going to Ruin Yuletide panic + months of bitching to your friends + sitting on the 25th waiting to hear from your recipient (although last year I was lucky; one of my recipients was ready, and the comment notification from her was actually how I found out the archive was open) = FUN. Seriously.

So of course you should do Yuletide again. You remember it as fun, which means the Yuletide magic worked for you.

That icon is great! It most definitely is Yuletide magic, because even though I logically know that the experience made me miserable for much of the fall/early winter, emotionally all I feel is something like, as you said, "Eee! Yuletide!"

Yeah, this year I'm determined I'll be EXTREMELY CAREFUL about what I say I'll write. But last year I missed the sign-up deadline and was SO PISSED at myself and felt super left out. I ended up pinch-hitting, but it's not the same!

You should dooooo it so we can all whine and complain together. ;)

I am sad you missed the sign up deadline too, because I know you would have written an awesome story! I am definitely going to be more cautious this year with my signups, or at least try to be, though the truth is that I have such a hard time finishing stories that I'm sure I'll whine no matter what prompt I get!

I will probably sign up, and yes, whining and complaining will certainly be next on the list! :)

Also: That icon is so great. I've been watching my S3 DVDs over the last week and watched Business School yesterday. SO GREAT.

I should not reply late at night! I misread your comment and missed the thing about pinch-hitting - I just went to the archive and read your Narnia story - it was wonderful! My memories of Narnia are kind of fuzzy, most formed by an animated version I watched as a kid, but your story still got me all choked up. Lovely!

Oh man, the DVDs have renewed my adoration for the show just in time for the new season; COINCIDENCE? I'm psyched you're still watching! Y-you should write fic!
