It's Yuletide time again! I am again debating whether or not to sign up, especially since I have been extra-unproductive in terms of fic this year. For the last three years or so, I've consistently produced a whopping three (3) stories a year, but this year I've only written one. I've been trying to get another finished, but it's not really happening. I feel like my fic self has left the building!

But the thing is, who can resist the siren's call of Yuletide?

SPEAKING of Yuletide - I can't believe I forgot to post about this sooner! I've participated in Yuletide for three years and every year I put in Broken Trail as one of my requests, and every year out of the approx. 7,895,763 people who participate in Yuletide, only 2 or 3 people offer to write in that fandom. Mainly because it's an AMC miniseries starring Robert Duvall and Lowell from Wings as cowboys who run into some Chinese women who had been sold into prostitution and need to be rescued - it's not exactly a hot fannish source. I think the only people who watched it were myself and 70% of the senior citizens in America.

But every year I put in a little request because in my (repeated) viewings of the miniseries (not all of which were my fault, because it runs practically twice a week on AMC now that they've lost most of their movie properties to TCM), I fell in love with the love story between Cowboy Lowell and Sun Fu, one of the ladies he rescues. It's totally one of those things where basically the most they do is send awkward looks each others' way, and one time she TOUCHES his CHEEK, and okay it's not much, but I CAN'T HELP IT. I LOVED THEM. I SAT THROUGH FOUR HOURS OF THAT WESTERN BASICALLY FOR EIGHT MINUTES OF FOOTAGE BETWEEN THEM.

And so every year I put in a request for a story about the two of them, and was never that surprised when it wasn't the request that got filled, because so few offered it. I was all geared up to request it again, BUT THEN.

I got a comment from someone who asked if it would be okay if they wrote a NYR Yuletide story to fill my request. WOULD THAT BE OKAY? YES IT WOULD!

And then the person wrote the story! AND THE STORY IS LOVELY!

Tom & Sun Fu share a moment one evening after they arrive at the Moncrieffe Ranch.

It's a lovely missing moment from the mini-series. What I wanted most when I made the request each of the three years was to have a glimpse at another moment between these two characters, and this story presented a lovely one. It was such a wonderful surprise to have it arrive in the middle of the year, too! Thank you so much, Gaslight!

every year I spend most of December with, "Why did I sign up for this? What was I thinking? Why did I sign up? DAMN YOU, SELF OF NOVEMBER!"

Me too! And I freak out progressively and keep changing my mind about what I want to write until the very last minute, then I mainline caffeine and write the whole thing in 24 hours. It's a stressful way to go about things, and every year I say I'm not going to do it that wey, but every year I do. Except this year, when I will totally be more sane. That's my story, and I'm sticking to it until December 20th.

Thanks a lot! I'm so touched to know that you remember "A Vermillion to One" so fondly. I've been working on a sequel to that one off and on ever since, and I'm going to try to have it done for January. I haven't decided which fandoms to offer yet, but I'm thinking maybe not KE, since I'm already working on that story, and my identity would be totally obvious if I used it for Yuletide.

You know, I am the exact same way about memes and challenges. I may post the answer a year or so later, but I get there eventually. I'm glad to hear that it's still on your agenda!
